COVID-19 Outbreak From The Perspective of Students With Specific Learning Disabilities, Their Famili

The aim of this study was to identify the problems and needs of students with specific learning disabilities, their families and teachers during the COVID-19 outbreak.

In this direction, the study was carried out with phenomenological design, which is one of the qualitative research methods, and the data were analyzed with the content analysis method. Focus group interviews were carried out with six students with specific learning disabilities, who live in the three largest provinces of Turkey, five families and eight special education teachers working with students with specific learning disabilities.

Method

This study, which aims to determine the problems and needs of students with SLD during the COVID19 epidemic, their families and teachers, was carried out with a phenomenology design, which is one of the qualitative research methods. With the phenomenology design (Büyüköztürk et al., 2011), which focuses on the phenomena that we are aware of but do not have an in-depth and detailed understanding of, it is aimed to highlight the perceptions and experiences of individuals from their own perspectives (Saban&Ersoy, 2019). With this method, which focuses on evaluating experiences (Miller & Brewer, 2003), the experiences of students with SLD, their families, and teachers who have experience working with students with SLD during the COVID-19 epidemic were evaluated. Data collection methods such as observation, interview, focus group interview and document review can be used in qualitative research. Focus group discussion was preferred in this research because this method can be used to obtain in depth and detailed information (Cokluk et al., 2011). The main purpose of focus group interviews is to obtain comprehensive and in-depth data from the participants about a determined topic (Bowling, 2002).

The students stated that it was very nice to be at home, but the lessons were lengthy and the brakes were short. Families stated that it was very enjoyable to spend time together at the beginning of the epidemic, but over time, sleeping, motivation and adaptation problems emerged for students and their children could not benefit from distance education. Special education teachers stated that they see distance education as difficult and wearing, they are not ready for distance education and as a society,we need innovations to turn this process into an opportunity. As a result of the study, it was concluded that teachers and families need support in the use of technological tools in the distance education, in the realization of educational adaptations for students remotely, and that students and families need psychological support systems.

Discussion

While the teachers who participated in the interview talked about the positive aspects of the distance education process they carried out, they mentioned that the support they received from the family was insufficient and expressed how important family education is and that families realized the importance of teachers' role in the education of their children. These findings are consistent with the research findings in which teachers stated the problems they experienced in not being able to support parents.
