Review of Sign Language Supported Reading Instruction Interventions for Students with Hearing Impairments

With this study, which aims to compile various reading interventions and methods that can be used in reading instruction for students with hearing impairments and include sign language, it is aimed to provide examples of teaching interventions and methods that can be developed in accordance with Turkish Sign Language (TSL).



Reading skills, which are a prerequisition for students to acquire the academic skills offered in school, to gain the communicative and social skills they will need in their social life and later adulthood, have an important role in human life.


As with normal hearing students, students with hearing impairments may experience some delays in acquiring reading skills. In Turkey, where auditory verbal method is mainly used in educational environments of students with hearing impairments, there are various initiatives that have attracted attention to the use of sign language recently.

As a result of these initiatives regarding the use of sign language in educational environments where students with hearing impairments attend, it is important to create teaching interventions and methods that include the use of sign language.



Method


With this study, which aims to compile various reading interventions and methods that can be used in reading instruction for students with hearing impairments and include sign language, it is aimed to provide examples of teaching interventions and methods that can be developed in accordance with Turkish Sign Language (TSL). As a result of the literature review at national and international level carried out for this purpose, 11 studies meeting the predetermined criteria were reached.


Findings


The findings obtained as a result of the descriptive analysis of the studies were summarized and presented, and suggestions were made within the scope of reading interventions that could be carried out based on TSL in line with the findings.
